This research group from the University of Vigo is looking for investors to be able to commercialize their patent for a biomaterial based on marine apatite obtained from shark teeth. This is a cheap and abundant raw material containing fluorine and other cell growth stimulants. Its unique chemical composition makes it an innovative Fluorapatite (FA), biomaterial (isolated or mixed with other types of HA) with superior characteristics, which can replace current HA materials at a very competitive price.
Today, the most widespread biomaterial for clinical applications such as bone gap filling and bone tissue regeneration is hydroxyapatite (HA). Current sources of this biomaterial are synthetic and of human or bovine origin, but these materials suffer from several disadvantages with respect to performance and biosafety.
