USC. PERIOPREDICTOR

USC. Periopredictor[line_break]P 201730994

Project Description

The USC holds the patent 201730994 dedicated to the determination of biomarkers for the screening and early prediction of periodontitis. The research group is looking for companies interested in licensing the system to develop a diagnostic/prognostic procedure based on the oral fluid levels of different combinations of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines for the diagnosis of periodontal diseases, their progression and their response to different therapeutic interventions.

The advantages of this technological development include:

  • To have innovative diagnostic tests based on cytokine levels, objectively quantifiable in oral fluids, focused on early recognition of the microbial challenge to the host, detecting changes in real time in the periodontium.
  • To have innovative diagnostic tests based on cytokine levels, which initially meet the two main characteristics of an ideal test.

These characteristics are:

  • Excellent predictive capacity of the clinical condition to be identified with values close to 100%.
  • Possibility of achieving this high prediction with only one or two cytokines, which substantially facilitates its development process.

Please refer to the description of this patent.

Description of the Area of Activity / Technology

Traditional clinical criteria for the diagnosis/ prognosis of chronic periodontitis are often inadequate:

  • Determine the sites of active disease
  • Measuring the degree of susceptibility to future progression
  • Quantitative monitoring of response to therapy

Therefore, one of the greatest challenges in the field of Periodontology is the determination of biomarkers for the screening and prediction of the early onset of periodontitis or the evaluation of the disease’s activity, as well as the effectiveness of therapy (diagnostic or prognostic tests).
