With an annual R&D budget of more than €100M, the University of Santiago de Compostela currently has nearly 3,000 researchers and its research covers a wide range of areas ranging from Health and Life Sciences, to Marine Resources, passing through Technical Disciplines, Humanities, and Social and Legal Sciences. In 2010, USC occupied 7th position among Spanish Universities in terms of number of scientific publications.
The value of this investment in research at USC is contrasted with productivity and quality indicators. Among them we can mention the more than 200 new researchers trained each year or the fact that 45% of the scientific articles published in cases of Health Sciences, Experimental Sciences and Engineering correspond to JCR (Journal Citation Reports) publications of the first quartile. It is also contrasted with data on the international dimension of this science, which captures more than 20% of its competitive projects in international calls and generates 45% of publications in collaboration with researchers from other countries. At the regional level, the USC is today one of the main sources of scientific production in Galicia, capturing more than 50% of the competitive R&D projects in our community and participating in almost 60% of the scientific production of the region. Galician University System.
The Valorization, Transfer and Entrepreneurship Area (AVTE) is responsible for the transfer of research results generated at the USC to society. Through the protection and maturation of the research results generated at the USC to society. Through the protection and maturation of the research results generated in its laboratories, its incorporation into the market is pursued, either through licenses to existing companies or through the creation of new technology-based companies or spin-offs. Currently, it has a portfolio of 250 patent applications (23-30 applications per year), and more than 170 patents granted in Spain and other countries, of which more than 10% were transferred to companies through the formalization of license agreements.
These results place the Universities of Santiago de Compostela as the 5th-9th best rated among Spanish universities in terms of technology transfer results. The USC is a pioneer in assuming an active role in supporting entrepreneurs, having a business incubator, a venture capital company promoted by the university itself and various support programs for spin-offs.
Recently, AVTE also launched the “Transfer Accelerator” program focused on covering the gap, not only in financing but also in attention, that exists between the completion of a research work and the company’s interest in investing in its development. . The “Transfer Accelerator” made possible an investment of more than €300,000 in the period 2012-2013 in 12 proof-of-concept projects for the maturation of research results generated at the USC.
