The University of Minho is currently one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in the country and has also progressively established itself on the international scene. Founded in 1973, it has three main centers. The campus of Gualtar, in Braga, and the campuses of Azurém and Couros, in Guimarães.
The University of Minho (UMinho) is today clearly a Research University. This is reflected in the position it has taken in the main international rankings, namely the Leiden Ranking, the main ranking linked to scientific research, which is a bibliometric ranking, but also in the high rankings of Times Higher Education (THE) The ranking of universities under 50 years.
Assuming itself as a research university, UMinho has increased its scientific production by publishing several thousand articles annually in scientific journals, papers and other contributions in scientific conferences and congresses, books and book chapters, and other types of publications.
In recent years, more than 2,000 publications are referenced annually in the ISI Web of Science (WoS) and/or Scopus databases. UMinho’s contribution to national production was 9% in the Scopus database and 8% in ISI WoS, with an average annual growth rate of about 15%, higher than the national average (11%).
The University of Minho has 32 Research Units (RU), of which 11 were classified in the last evaluation promoted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), using international evaluation panels as Exceptional (1) or Excellent (10). More than 40% of UMinho’s researchers work in these centres. The University also has 11 Research Units classified as Very Good, which means that more than 60% of UMinho’s researchers work in very good, excellent or exceptional RU’s, covering the areas of Exact Sciences, Natural Sciences, Computer Science, Computer Science, Computer Science and Computer Technology.
