Smart Separations

Description

Smart Separations was launched in the UK in 2013 by a Portuguese PhD researcher, Hugo Macedo. At the origin of Smart Separations is the research and development work for the creation of an innovative microfiltration technology using ceramic filters that can be adapted and applied in various industries. As a result of the maturation of the patented technology, Smart Separations Portugal was created in 2018 with the main purpose of housing the company’s first production unit and the unit of research and development of products for applications in the area of biotechnology.

With Smart Separations Portugal, we want to be a world leader in microfiltration technologies, filling a gap that currently exists in the market.

Our mission is to improve the quality of life through innovation applied to areas such as health, environment and industry. With the objective of designing innovative solutions, the ceramic filters developed by Smart Separations provide a versatile and economical solution for a large number of applications and functionalities, including air filtration, reduction of pollutant emissions, water purification, wine clarification, and other improvements in areas related to life sciences. These filters also have the potential to be coated with nano-materials, acquiring additional functionalities such as the degradation of bad odors or the elimination of bacteria and viruses.

Smart Separations technology incorporates the unique ability to control filter pore size in small increments (from 1 to 100 μm), allowing for more customization and applications than any competing technology. In addition, it has a high density of pores and, because they are ceramic, the filters have good resistance to extreme temperatures and chemicals, and can be used for a variety of purposes and also coated with nano-materials for additional functionality.

With a wide range of potential applications, Smart Separations has currently developed two products, one in the field of air purification, to improve indoor air quality, and another in the biomedical sector, for the separation of human cells in the study of cancer and blood.

To develop new products and/or market its products, Smart Separations is committed to integrating its technology with existing products by partnering with existing suppliers or distributors.
