Project Description

The objective of the ACE project is the development of a computer application for clinical decision support that allows the appropriate choice of dressing to treat an ulcer from a photograph of the damaged area. In order to carry out this project, we are looking for companies to finance the study in order to create an application that will identify the wounds and tissues present in the wound, based on advanced Deep Learning techniques. In addition, to select the dressing the application implements the recommendations of the latest clinical practice guidelines on the treatment of chronic wounds.

The main objective is to provide nurses with a quick and easy-to-use application that guarantees optimal clinical practice in the adoption of dressings, avoiding variability in wound treatment, unifying criteria for action and optimizing product consumption.

Chronic wounds are a major health problem, both in terms of their prevalence and their impact. They have a great impact on patients, since they deteriorate their state of health and quality of life, and on social and health resources, since the Health System must deal with the increase in the need for care, the cost of treatment materials, the treatment of complications and longer hospital stays.

Chronic wound management is complex and requires extensive evaluation. The benefits of a dressing are both reduced healing and nursing times, reduced pain, less wound manipulation and therefore a better quality of life for the patient. Some studies report on the lack of ability of nurses to identify different types of injuries. In addition, in recent years there has been a large increase in the number of dressings available, making it difficult to choose dressings if the characteristics of each dressing are not known. As a result, it is common for clinical practice to depend on an expert to identify the stage of the ulcer and validate the type of dressing to be applied. This causes a bottleneck in the system, which in most cases results in an incorrect choice of dressing, which, in addition to being a serious disorder for the patient, implies a significant consumption for the health system both in human and material resources, resulting in a not inconsiderable economic impact.
